The Valparaiso Family YMCA has been awarded a grant from the Porter County Community Foundation in support of its Equal Access Aquatics project.
The Community Fund grant supports the purchase of a new ADA-compliant mobile pool lift chair at the Y’s Aquatics Center. It ensures that individuals of all abilities can safely and comfortably access the pool and hot tub.
The project represents a step toward enhancing accessibility, safety and inclusion for hundreds of members and community participants who rely on aquatic therapy, exercise and recreation. Each year, the Y serves over 16,000 members and provides aquatic physical therapy to over 300.
“Equal Access Aquatics is about more than equipment, it’s about dignity, inclusion and community health,” said Sharon Johnson, Valparaiso Family YMCA president and CEO, in a press release. “This grant allows us to make a lasting impact on individuals and families who depend on water-based therapy and recreation. We’re deeply grateful to the Porter County Community Foundation for helping us make the Y a more accessible place for all.”
The addition of the new mobile lift chair will replace an outdated unit and expand access to the hot tub area. The investment will improve safety for caregivers and staff while ensuring that every member, regardless of physical ability, can benefit from the healing and recreational opportunities of aquatic programs.
“PCCF is proud to support the Valparaiso YMCA in advancing equal access for all,” Bill Higbie, Porter County Community Foundation president and CEO, said. “This project aligns with our work to uplift families and strengthen Porter County.”
