Valparaiso YMCA honors changemakers

The Valparaiso Family YMCA recently recognized CeCe Arocho and Annmarie Severson with the 2025 Changemaker Award.

The award honors volunteerism and leadership that reflect the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Arocho overcame health and financial challenges after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at a young age. Through therapy with a Y personal trainer and the support of the Y’s financial assistance program, she regained her ability to walk.

Inspired to give back, Arocho began volunteering in the Y’s Childwatch program. She contributed over 250 hours of service. In 2024, Arocho joined the YMCA staff.

Severson has been a Y member and advocate for over 15 years. She has participated in group fitness, cheered on Ringing in Spring runners and served in nearly every major leadership role on the YMCA board.

Severson’s leadership has helped guide strategic decisions, strengthen governance and deepen community engagement.

“These two women represent the very best of what it means to be part of the Y,” said Sharon Johnson, Valparaiso Family YMCA president and CEO, in a press release. “Their stories are rooted in service, perseverance and community. We are honored to recognize CeCe and Annmarie for the positive change they create every day.”
