Transitional veteran family home opens

Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana, the City of Lake Station and the Lake County Community Economic Development Department have opened a home for veteran parents with children.

The housing initiative addresses a critical gap in veteran housing across Lake County. Currently, transitional and veteran rental housing options in Lake County are limited to one-bedroom units, which do not accommodate veterans returning from deployment with children. The new Habitat home supports an entire veteran family, ensuring families can remain together while rebuilding stability.

“This project fills a critical gap in our local housing continuum and demonstrates how strong partnerships can deliver real, lasting impact for those who have served our country,” said Dawn Michaels, Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana executive director, in a press release. “Veterans returning home are often parents striving to create stability for their children. This home offers dignity, security and a realistic path forward for families who have sacrificed so much.”

The project was made possible in part through financial support from the Lake County Community Economic Development Department, underscoring the county’s commitment to veteran services and family-centered housing solutions.

“The Lake County Community Economic Development Department is proud to support an initiative that addresses an unmet housing need for veteran families,” Tim Brown, Lake County Community Economic Development Department executive director, said. “By investing in solutions that keep families together, we strengthen both individual households and the broader community.”

The home is fully completed and move-in ready. Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana is currently accepting applications from a veteran parent with children who are in need of transitional housing. The home provides a safe, stable environment where families can focus on reconnecting, rebuilding and preparing for long-term housing success.

“We are proud that Lake Station is home to this first-of-its-kind transitional veteran family home,” Mayor Bill Carroll said. “This collaboration reflects our city’s commitment to supporting veterans, strengthening families and creating opportunities for stability and success.”
