The town of Merrillville was recognized as a Tree City USA community for the 14th consecutive year.
In addition to the distinction, Merrillville earned the Arbor Day Foundation’s Growth Award. The honors highlight the town's environmental initiatives and tree care practices.
Communities earn the distinction by meeting specific Tree City USA criteria. The standards include having a dedicated tree board or department, upholding a tree care ordinance and earmarking an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita. They also must conduct an annual Arbor Day celebration.
“Tree City USA communities see the positive effects of an urban forest firsthand,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation, in a press release. “The trees being planted and cared for by Merrillville are ensuring that generations to come will enjoy to a better quality of life. Additionally, participation in this program brings residents together and creates a sense of civic pride, whether it's through volunteer engagement or public education.”
Rick Bella, town council president, recognized the collaborative efforts of town associates, the Merrillville Lions Club, municipal officials and other contributors who have helped enhance the community by planting, nurturing and celebrating trees.
“We are excited to unveil our upcoming spring projects, which will see the planting of hundreds of fruit-bearing trees,” Bella said. “This endeavor will not only enrich our landscape but also offer residents the unique opportunity to one day pluck fresh produce from town-owned trees.”
The town of Merrillville encompasses about 31 square miles. The land was originally covered by dense forest. Merrillville officially became a town in 1971.
