Matthew Yee recently became one of five students across the nation to be named a Tau Beta Pi Laureate.

Yee, a 2024 graduate, earned degrees in civil engineering and music at Valparaiso University. Following graduation, he was accepted into the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Coast Guard Band. Yee elected to become a euphonium player with the U.S. Coast Guard Band.

“Although I may be working as a professional musician, I will undoubtedly find an outlet to be an engineer in the future,” Yee said in a press release.

During Yee’s time at the university, he served as an intern for TSD Engineering, a land development firm in Auburn. Yee worked with computer-aided design tools and received experience in the world of engineering.

The Tau Beta Pi Laureate honor recognizes students who exemplify the “spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges.” Honorees are selected for the categories of arts, athletics, diverse achievements and service. Due to his success in music, Yee achieved distinction in the arts category.

Yee is the sixth Valparaiso University student to be named a Tau Beta Pi Laureate since 2010.
