Sylvan Learning recently expanded its footprint in Indiana by opening a new location in Portage.
The new center will provide academic support to families in the Portage area. Many students previously had to travel to other Sylvan Learning locations in the Region. Sylvan Learning’s goal is to make it easier for families to engage with services consistently over time.
Sarah Miller is director of the new center, along with her business partner Kent Kolbow. Miller left a career in nonprofit work to open a Sylvan Learning center with Kolbow in 2010 in Mishawaka. Fifteen years later, the pair owns 21 Sylvan Learning centers across Indiana, Florida and Maryland.
Under their leadership, the Mishawaka center grew from a handful of students to hundreds served each year. Miller is working to build relationships with local schools and the community.
The new facility is at 1605 Adler St. in Portage.
Sylvan Learning provides personalized tutoring and educational services to struggling students. The company operates over 750 locations worldwide. Founded in 1979, Sylvan Learning is based in Baltimore, Maryland.
