VALPARAISO – The Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana has recognized the Valparaiso University College of Engineering as December Innovator of the Month for its work in manufacturing and assembling two Braille presses.
The VU project with a joint effort with Lutheran Braille Workers Inc. of California, to design a new Braille press to serve the blind. The technology replaces a 60-year-old wooden press.
The new press is made of aluminum and plastic. Each press costs $1,400, but the cost was paid through a grant from the Valparaiso Guild and the College of Engineering.
