The first phase of a high-tech data center in Hammond now is operational.

Developers of the Digital Crossroad Data Center have opened a 105,000-square-foot data center on the site of the former State Line Generating Facility. Tours are available by appointment.

A grand opening event for Nov. 18 was postponed because of the pandemic but representatives for the data center said it would be rescheduled at a later date.

The facility caters to the evolving digital-age, specifically how businesses and people store and stream their cloud-based needs. It also will help address growing demand for improved infrastructure for tech-savvy people who are increasing use of smartphones, tablets, and laptops on faster wireless networks.

Construction of the $40 million first phase on the 77-acre site began in August 2018. Developers at the time said the project has the potential to grow into a $200 million investment across three buildings, which could total 400,000 square feet.
