State senator proposes online sales tax

INDIANAPOLIS – State Sen. Luke Kenley, R-Noblesville, plans to introduce a bill at the 2012 session of the Indiana General Assembly to eliminate the state’s inheritance tax and replace it with a sales tax from all online sales.

Kenley said Indiana will lose $165 million a year starting in 2020 if the inheritance tax is eliminated. However, that could be replaced nearly dollar for dollar if sales taxes were collected on all online sales to Hoosiers.

State law now requires online sales taxes to be collected only from online retailers who have a physical presence in the state.
