A leading cause of disability for people 50 years and older, peripheral vascular disease PVD, commonly referred to as peripheral artery disease (PAD), causes the narrowing of blood vessels outside the heart and brain, leading to weakened or blocked arteries. St Mary Medical Center raises PVD awareness. Interventional Cardiologist Anas Safadi, M.D., will present “Peripheral Vascular Disease: That Was Then, This Is Now,” from 6 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 1 in the Auditorium at St. Mary Medical Center, located at 1500 S. Lake Park Ave. in Hobart.
According to Dr. Safadi, left untreated, PVD can lead to permanent numbness in the legs or feet, or more serious conditions such as gangrene, in addition to increasing one’s risk of heart attack and stroke. Join Dr. Safadi as he discusses common misconceptions about PVD along with advances in treatment options for the disease.
