SpaPointe Aesthetician Receives Sunrise Award

MUNSTER – SpaPointe aesthetician Holli Zabek, facilitator for the Cancer Resource Centre’s Look Good Feel Better program, is the recipient of the American Cancer Society’s Sunrise Award for outstanding service. The award is presented to those who provide “emotional support and spirit-lifting services” to cancer patients.

Look Good Feel Better is a non-medical public service program that teaches beauty techniques to people with cancer to help them manage appearance-related side effects of treatment. During a Look Good Feel Better session, trained volunteer cosmetologists teach women with cancer how to cope with skin changes and hair loss.

“Since 2006, Holli has been an essential component of the program as a volunteer and a mentor to newly trained Look Good Feel Better facilitators,” said Rachelle Anthony, Health Systems Manager, Hospitals, American Cancer Society. “Her compassion, empathy and thoughtful approach when working with cancer patients during a Look Good Feel Better session is something I wish could be bottled and used (everywhere).”

Northwest Indiana cancer patients have access to the Look Good Feel Better program at the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster. The Cancer Resource Centre is a support program of the Community Cancer Research Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of cancer care in Northwest Indiana and the South Chicago Suburbs. All services of the Cancer Resource Centre – support groups, mind-body-spirit classes, educational offerings and a resource library – are offered free of charge to those in need.

“We appreciate Holli volunteering her services to the “Look Good, Feel Better” program for the past 10 years. Her tips for cancer patients on skin care, makeup application and hairstyling truly makes so many women feel better about themselves and gives them more confidence at a time when they are so sensitive about how they look,” said Anthony Andello, Cancer Resource Centre director.

During the day, Zabek is an aesthetician with SpaPointe, the Munster-based hair salon and spa that is part of Community Healthcare System. SpaPointe’s mission is to promote the enhancement of self-renewal, stress management and overall well-being of clientele.

“Her knowledge about skin care, makeup and the way she interacts with patients makes her an invaluable part of the program and a great asset to new volunteers,” states Anthony.

Look Good Feel Better is offered on a quarterly basis at the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster, 926 Ridge Road. All Cancer Resource Centre programs are free of charge to cancer patients and their loved ones. A physician’s prescription is required before attending mind/body/spirit programs at the Centre.
