Section Calumet Trail Temporarily ClosedMERRILLVILLE — Through October 31, a 4.5 mile section of the Calumet Trail adjacent to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will be temporarily closed from East State park Boundary Road to Mineral Springs Rd.

The temporary closure will allow NIPSCO to replace and upgrade an underground natural gas line this year.

This project is just one of the existing and future investments planned as part of the company’s longterm effort to modernize the gas and electric infrastructure across its entire service area.

The pedestrian crossing from the South Shore’s Dune Park Station to the Indiana Dunes State Park will remain open, but will be within the construction work zone. NIPSCO is working with the Porter County and other agencies to make sure proper signs and notices are provided on both approaches of the closure. Environmental surveys for the project were completed to fully assess environmentally sensitive features within the proximity of the project. As with every project, NIPSCO’s project team worked with the regulating agencies and local stakeholders to avoid and minimize environmental impacts.

NIPSCO reminds customers who travel near construction areas to please exercise caution to ensure personal safety and the safety of construction crews working on this project.

The new natural gas line is being installed to provide safer and more reliable service to area residents and businesses in the future.
