Sales of existing homes in Region running behind last year’s pace

The Greater Northwest Indiana Association of Realtors reported 866 closed sales in April, down from 927 closed sales reported in April 2018.

Sales of existing homes in the greater Northwest Indiana area were down in April when compared to the same month a year ago.

The Greater Northwest Indiana Association of Realtors reported 866 closed April sales in its service area, which includes Jasper, Lake, La Porte, Newton, Porter, Pulaski and Starke counties. This is a drop of 6.6 percent when compared to April 2018 when 927 closed sales were reported.

In March, the realtors’ association reported 733 closed sales, which was an 8.9 percent drop from 805 closed sales were reported in March 2018.

Sales of existing homes in the greater Region area year-to-date are down 5.6 percent when compared to the same time last year. The realtors’ association reported closed sales so far this year total 2,714, down from 2,876.

In April, the median sales price was $168,000, which is a 4.3 percent increase from $161,000 in April 2018. Sellers in April received 95.7 percent of their list price, which was down 0.1 percent from 95.8 percent in April 2018.

Pending sales also saw a decline in April. There were 990 pending sales in April, which was down 9.8 percent or 1,097 when compared to April 2018.

Inventory of homes available for sale continues to decline, which likely is contributing to rising prices. Available homes for purchase totaled 3,060, down 6.8 percent from 3,283 in April 2018.

The average sale price for homes was $190,547, up 3.8 percent from $183,657 in April 2018.
