MERRILLVILLE – Regional Mental Health Center has received the only recent HUD grant to an Indiana agency to provide supportive housing for disabled people. The three year grants include a $2.9 million capital advance and $159,900 rental subsidy.

Robert Krumwied, chief executive officer of Regional Mental Health Center, said the agency plans to build a new building in Griffith.

“We’re pleased to be able to give adults with disabilities an opportunity to live independently in our community,” said Krumwied. “This type of subsidized rental housing with available supportive services enables residents to have a better quality of life.”

The 15-unit apartment complex for the chronically mentally ill includes 14 one-bedroom units and a two-bedroom manager’s unit.
