The U.S. Department of Education officially named Purdue University Northwest a Hispanic-Serving Institution.
Colleges and universities are awarded Hispanic-Serving Institution status when they enroll at least 25% of undergraduate full-time Hispanic or Latino students.
“At PNW, we understand that the core responsibility of an HSI is to intentionally serve Latino students and their families by embracing the richness of each background and culture to enhance the student and family experience,” said Elizabeth Babcock Depew, vice chancellor for enrollment management and student affairs, in a press release. “Hispanic-Serving Institution is not only a designation, it is a commitment to empowering students and their families through education and opportunity.”
Regional leaders praised PNW’s efforts to advance higher education opportunities for Latino students.
“The diverse backgrounds, cultures and viewpoints of Hispanic and Latino students strengthen PNW and ultimately enrich our nation,” Indiana State Rep. Mike Andrade said.
Higher education institutions designated as Hispanic-Serving Institutions are eligible for several federal programs and grants. In 2023, the Biden-Harris administration awarded over $40 million to Hispanic-Serving Institutions to expand educational opportunities and improve retention for Latino students.
Purdue University Northwest has campuses in Hammond and Westville. It serves about 8,900 undergraduate and graduate students. The university offers over 70 areas of study.
