Short term, affordable services available to adults and children affected by anxiety, depression, grief/loss, drug/alcohol abuse and more. PNW Community Counseling Center offers services that can help.
Purdue University Northwest has opened a Community Counseling Center to provide short-term, affordable therapeutic services for adults and children dealing with anxiety and depression, grief/loss, the effects of drug or alcohol abuse, and issues related to identity/sexual orientation and coping.
The center, located in the PNW Community Services Building at 2415 169th St., just northeast of the Calumet Campus, is a service of the university’s Department of Counseling and Professional Education. The center is open Tuesdays from noon to 8:15 p.m. during the summer. As demand increases, hours will be expanded.
Graduate students & licensed professionals
Graduate students preparing for careers in counseling and trained in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling and Indiana Counselors Association on Alcohol & Drug Abuse programs provide the counseling under supervision and training of licensed professionals and faculty.
The center was created in response to two foundational goals: to provide Northwest Indiana citizens affordable, confidential and competent mental health counseling and to offer opportunities for graduate students to apply their knowledge in a counseling environment.
Affordable, competent & compassion
“We know there are many instances in which individuals cannot afford counseling due to rising mental health treatment costs, lack of health insurance and/or because they have exhausted session allotments or mental health benefit assistance,” Community Counseling Center Director, Interim Head of the Purdue Northwest Calumet Campus Department of Counseling and Professional Education and Associate Professor Mary J. Didelot said.
She added, “As health professionals, we understand the importance of referring clients for ethical, competent and compassionate counseling and consultation in a safe environment.”
