The former Outback Steakhouse restaurant at 8117 Georgia St. in Merrillville has a new owner.

Commercial real estate firm Latitude Commercial announced operators of Illinois-based Wu’s House and Woow Shushi Restaurants has purchased the location along with the adjoining land.

The buyer’s plan is to remodel and expand the existing building as well as add more parking, according to the Merrillville-based real estate firm.

“This is an exciting addition to the Merrillville market,” said Brett McDermott, who along with Aaron McDermott, represented the sellers in the transaction. “The full-service restaurant will be a great attraction and draw from all over the area.”

Tampa Bay-based Outback Steakhouse, which operates more than 1,000 restaurants around the country, opened at the site in 2002. It announced in late 2016 it was building a new and larger location in the Southlake Point shopping center at the corner of U.S. 30 and Mississippi Street where it still operates.

Operators of Wu’s House has Illinois restaurants in Orland Park, Evergreen Park and Mokena as well as Woow Sushi Restaurants in Orland Park, La Grange and Algonquin.
