MERRILLVILLE – The Merrillville/Ross Township Historical Society Museum will meet noon on Sunday, Sept. 16 to begin plans for its Oct. 28 kickoff for its year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of Old Lincoln Highway.
Old Lincoln Highway was the nation’s first coast-to-coast improved road. The Oct. 28 event include artist Mitch Markovitz unveiling a new South Shore Line painting and poster honoring Lincoln Highway.
Today, the 1913 original section of Lincoln Highway in Merrillville is 73rd Avenue. It was built to follow the Great Sauk Trail. The Merrillville/Ross Township Veterans Memorial Park, Merrillville Cemetery, Merrillville School (now the museum) and Old Mill are a few of the historic sites along the route.
