November jobless rates rise in several Indiana metro areas

Jobless rates in some parts of Indiana rose in November when compared to the same month a year ago and fell in others.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data, reported the November jobless rate in the Gary area was 4.2% in November, which is up from 4.1% in November 2018 and up from 3.8% in October.

Jobless rates increased in areas where manufacturing is a major employment base. Manufacturers historically slow production toward the end of the year.

The Elkhart-Goshen area’s jobless rate in November was 2.8%, which was unchanged from October, but up from 2.7% in November 2018.

The Michigan City-La Porte area jobless rate in November was 3.9%, up from 3.6% in October but down from 4% in November 2018.

South Bend-Mishawaka’s November jobless rate was 3.5%, up from 3.4% in October, which also was its rate for November 2018.

Indiana’s jobless rate in November was 3.2%, which is unchanged from September. The nation’s jobless rate in November was 3.5%, which is up from 3.6% in October but down from 3.7% from November 2018.
