The University of Notre Dame has its first assistant vice president for campus ministry. The Rev. Pete McCormick will lead the university's “faith formation, spiritual life and liturgical offerings” in the Division of Student Affairs.

McCormick will oversee a staff of about 30 religious leaders and ministers. He also will continue to lead the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic church on campus.

McCormick served as the director of campus ministry since 2015. He also served as the associate director of campus ministry and rector of Keough Hall, a men's dormitory.

“Father Pete has clearly and consistently demonstrated his leadership and presence on our campus and, as we prepare to implement our next strategic plan, I am grateful for the many ways Father Pete and our campus ministry team have and will continue to contribute to discussions around the role of faith in our students’ lives,” said the Rev. Gerard Olinger, vice president for student affairs, in a press release.

A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., McCormick went to West Catholic High School. After graduating in 2000 from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, he entered Moreau Seminary in Notre Dame.

He was ordained a Holy Cross priest in 2007. He earned his master's degree in 2006 and executive MBA in 2015 from Notre Dame.

He also likes to coach basketball, serving as chaplain of the men's basketball team. While in seminary, he coached fifth and sixth grade teams at St. John Vianney Parish in Goodyear, Ariz., where he worked teaching mathematics.

Also promoted were Tami Schmitz, Kate Barrett and Mike Buckler to director positions.
