MERRILLVILLE – NiSource, the parent company for Northern Indiana Public Service Co., has announced the appointment of Sigmund Cornelius to its board of directors. Cornelius is the former chief financial officer at ConocoPhillips.

He replaces Dennis Foster, who chose not to stand for re-election because of e-mail he had sent to David Hardy, the former chairman of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. Foster is alleged to have offers Hardy and his wife a tour of a Kentucky thoroughbred farm and a day at the track. The e-mails were sent after the IURC granted NIPSCO a 16.8 percent electric rate increase.

Cornelius joined ConocoPhillips in 1980 and held a variety of management positions.
