La Porte, Ind. – Tour de La Porte (TdL) is a bike ride, running and walking event to benefit patients with cancer in the La Porte community, with one hundred percent of the funds being used for direct patient assistance and cancer screenings. Cancer is a disease that comes with many burdens, including financial ones. The IU Health La Porte Foundation’s Cancer Fund provides assistance to people in need so these patients do not have to tell their loved ones that they are giving up because they can no longer afford medication or treatment.
In 2012, The Foundation provided $34,000 in assistance to cancer patients through the Cancer Patient Fund. As of August 1, 2013, the fund has provided 77 patients with various forms of assistance. This assistance includes transportation, pharmaceuticals and associated dental care, as well as costs associated with treatment.
The money raised through TdL comes directly back to the community to help local cancer patients receive the care that they need. Donations to the event are gratefully accepted from anyone who cannot participate in the event or who would like to donate more than just their registration fee.
