WHITING – Ineos, a chemical manufacturer in Whiting, has announced it will close its Northwest Indiana operations by the end of the year.

The closing of its plant on Standard Avenue will put 40 people out of work. Ineos, based in Switzerland, opened in Whiting in 1983. The company produces 88,000 tons of polyisobutene, which is used as a fuel additive and as an additive in industrial lubricants.

The company said declining sales led to the closing.
