TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – The U.S. St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp. has released results of a study that shows Great Lakes ports and related businesses support 227,000 jobs and provide billions of dollars in wages, tax revenue and purchases.
Among the jobs are dock workers, warehoused workers and pilot vessels along with steelworkers, farmers and construction workers.
The study comes at a time when environmentalists and others are working to prohibit ocean-going vessels from entering the fresh-water Great Lakes system because of concern over invasive species such as zebra mussels.
