Someone seeking office furniture or a memento from Franciscan Health’s Hammond Hospital may be in luck.
The health system is hosting a garage sale at the hospital, 5454 Hohman Ave., on Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Many of the available items are from areas of the hospital that have been shut down.
Franciscan has been preparing the massive Hammond hospital site for an extensive renovation, which was announced in May 2021.
System officials said there will be no charge for items, which had been previously used at the hospital campus, but a donation is requested. Donations will go to the Franciscan Alliance Employee Assistance Fund.
Available items include various housewares and house décor items; assorted tables and chairs; file cabinets; hanging file holders; desk organizers and various office supplies; cubicles and dividers; desks; twin/full sized beds; and other assorted items.
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing work has been happening behind the scenes at the hospital since late last year in preparation for the renovation.
The Hammond hospital has remained opened, though available services have been scaled back. When renovations are completed, the hospital will continue providing 24/7 emergency services, along with inpatient care for short stays, imaging services, laboratory services, wound care, dialysis, prenatal care and primary care.
Other services were transitioned to nearby Franciscan hospitals in Munster and Dyer.
Franciscan officials approved spending $15 million to demolish sections of the hospital and about $31.2 million to renovate the remaining space into an eight-bed acute care facility. Representatives have said demolition and exterior renovation work could begin in early 2022.
