CHICAGO — In recognition of Black History Month, Fifth Third Bank Chicago honored several distinguished African-Americans for their countless contributions that have impacted the lives of many in the Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland community. The honorees were Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, Robin Robinson, Emmy Award-winning TV Journalist and Jimmy Akintonde, President & CEO of Ujamaa Construction.

The honorees were saluted at a special event on Feb. 25 at the South Shore Cultural Center in Chicago. Each honoree received a crystal award and a namesake $5,300 scholarship that will be awarded to a local high school student to be applied to his/her first year of college. The scholarships are intended to “pay it forward” in spirit of the honoree.
