Dredging begins on Indiana Harbor Ship Canal

EAST CHICAGO – Dredging of the heavily polluted Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal has begun. The century old canal connects industries in East Chicago and Whiting with Lake Michigan.

Over the years it has accumulate so much toxic material that the waterway is considered the most polluted in the Great Lakes.

Dredging will removed 4.6 million cubic yards of sediment, which will be stored on a 186-acre confined disposal site along Indianapolis Boulevard. Dredging will be done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers which said it will take five years to complete.
