The Pathway to Adventure Council honored Terry McMahon, CEO of McMahon & Associates CPAs, during its Distinguished Citizens Dinner on Nov. 8.

A committee chose McMahon for the honor based on his “extensive community service and financial support to Northwest Indiana, especially in regard to Northwest Indiana University where his contributions have funded numerous upgrades within the athletics department,” according to a council representative.

“It was such an honor to be surrounded by friends, family and colleagues in support of a cause that’s close to my heart,” McMahon said.

For 33 years, the Pathway to Adventure Council has spotlighted top community leaders in Northwest Indiana during the annual event. The organization supports programs such as Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Exploring, Sea Scouts, Restoring the Village and STEM in Scouting.

“He has this level of commitment that goes beyond just most people I know,” said Michael Schrage, CEO of Centier Bank in an honoree video. “He will go to the lengths of doing things for people he really believes in.”

Schrage said he has known McMahon for more than 40 years and that they have become “true” friends. He said McMahon was there for him during hard times.

McMahon has a long history of supporting youth in the Region. His service includes leadership at the Munster Youth Activities Association. He and his wife also donated $100,000 to Indiana University Northwest's athletic program in 2019. The funds established the Terry and Karen McMahon Resource Center, according to the IUN website.

“We have spent 40 years of armchair coaching of Indiana basketball,” said David Allard, CEO of Allard Rental Corp. and Marcus Truck Rental.

McMahon earned his accounting degree from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 1962. He started his own practice in 1971, which now employs 30 professionals who serve more than 500 businesses and prepare about 1,300 tax returns. His Munster-based company offers tax expertise, IRS representation, audits, business valuations, estate planning and succession planning, along with basic bookkeeping and payroll services.
