PORTER – The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District has announced plans to increase fares for commuters by 5 percent. NICTD operated the South Shore Railroad, a commuter rail service that goes from Michiana Regional Airport in South Bend to the Loop in downtown Chicago.

The rail line is based in Michigan City, but the commuter line’s administrative office is in Porter.

If approved, the increase would go into effect Feb. 15, 2012.

Before any increase is implemented, NICTD will hold a series of five public meetings across its service territory.

In Illinois, METRA, which is responsible for the portion of the commuter line in Illinois, has announced it will increase fares for Illinois riders by 32 percent, effective Feb. 15.
