MERRILLVILLE – South Shore Clean Cities and the Indiana Clean Diesel Coalition have created an event in Northwest Indiana to promote the use of clean diesel. Private and public entities that operate diesel fleets and related equipment that serve public needs are invited to attend.

Carl Lisek, South Shore Clean Cities' executive director, said the most important aspect to clean diesel is reducing emissions from diesel engines. “This can be done by installing catalytic convertors or diesel oxidation catalysts. There also are special engines that sense when a vehicle is idling, which makes it switch to a lower output mode.”

The event will May 2, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Purdue University Calumet Student Union Library Building, 2200 169th St., Hammond.

Representatives from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management will announce DieselWise Indiana grant opportunities for projects designed to reduce diesel emissions significantly across northern Indiana.

Lisek said presentations focus specifically on improving air quality by reducing diesel emissions. Lunch is provided with registration through http://www.southshorecleancities.org/events, info@southshorecleancities.org, or (219) 644-3690.
