MICHIGAN CITY – Franciscan St. Anthony Health-Michigan City has received support from the public and the state in its fight against breast cancer.

Laura and Vic Gerhardt, owners of Chesterton-based Above Board Construction, presented the hospital with a $5,888 donation.

Their “Power of Pink” effort is augmented by a company truck that has been painted that color and advertises their efforts, and through campaigns on Facebook and Twitter.

The Gerhardts will donate $1 on behalf of those who “Like” their site on Facebook and who follow them on Twitter. They will donate $2 for those who post on their page where and when they saw the truck and $5 for those who photograph the truck and post it on the page.

“We want to help this cause and create more awareness that prevention saves lives,” said Laura Gerhardt. “We want to be proactive, not reactive.

In addition, for the third year in a row, the hospital has received a $6,750 grant from Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust Inc. to provide 50 mammograms for underinsured and uninsured women 40 and older.
