GARY – The U.S. Environmental Protect Agency on Monday announced it had awarded more than $1 million in federal grants to organizations involved in protecting the Great Lakes.

Of that amount, $607,000 was given to the Save the Dunes Conservation Fund and the City of Valparaiso to repair the Thorgren detention basin in the Salt Creek watershed to prevent phosphorus and sediment from reaching Lake Michigan.

In addition, $275,000 was given to the University of Notre Dame for research into invasive species of carp into Lake Michigan. The study will focus on testing the DNA of live bait at more than 400 bait shops around Lake Michigan.
