Region residents interested in sharing their views on how federal transportation funds are directed in Northwest Indiana still have time to register their comments.

The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission is accepting public comment through Jan. 8 on the draft changes to the 2020-2024 Transportation Improvement Program.

NIRPC’s TIP is a short-range financial and spending plan on where to direct federal transportation funding. The funds can be used for highway, transit, and non-motorized transportation projects.

The transportation improvement program is periodically updated and includes projects undertaken by municipalities, counties, transit operators, and the state, NIRPC said. Federal planning regulations guide the preparation and development of TIP documents.

Comments can be emailed to nirpc@nirpc.org or phoned in by calling (219) 763-6060. Comments also can be mailed to NIRPC, 6100 Southport Road, Portage, IN 46368.

NIRPC said all comments will be compiled into a public comment report and responded to by someone in the organization. The report will be made available to the public and distributed to the relevant NIRPC committees prior to any action on these items.

NIRPC said its technical planning committee likely will discuss the plan during its Jan. 12 meeting with its recommendations going to the NIRPC commission for its Jan. 21 meeting.

Documents and information will be available for review on NIRPC’s website at www.nirpc.org.
