Northwest Indiana Clean Air has launched Project Lightning Bug, a bicycle safety and air quality education initiative.
The program plans to give away 3,000 bike lights and hand out air quality education materials at public events including night rides, safety villages and bike rodeos.
Project Lightning Bug will be at the following events/programs in the coming weeks:
- June 26 – Aug. 9 (Tuesdays and Thursdays) – Hammond Police Department Safety Village, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Hammond Civic Center, Hammond.
- June 30 – Oct. 27 – Miller Spotlight Take Bike the Streets Build-A-Bike, Saturdays, Noon-2 p.m., 6300 Old Miller Ave. Gary.
- June 30 – La Porte City Police Department Bike Rodeo, 9 a.m.-11 a.m., Kesling Park, La Porte.
- July 20 – City of La Porte Parks and Recreation Department Night Ride, Beechwood Gold Course, La Porte.
- July 21 – Home Town Happenings Night Ride, Crown Point.
- Aug. 11 – WHAM Night Ride, Hammond.
- Aug. 17 – City of La Porte Parks and Recreation Department Night Ride, Civic Auditorium, La Porte.
- Aug. 25 – City of Valparaiso Parks and Recreation Department Night Ride.
- September – Hammond Port Authority Pedestrian Bridge Grand Opening, dates to be determined
- Tri-Town Safety Village Safety Classes and Events, dates to be determined
- Knights of Columbus Bike Project, dates to be determined
