KENTLAND – Newton County Commissioner Russell Collins Jr., has been named an Innovator of the Month by the Gerald I. Lamkin Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center of Ivy Tech Community College.

Collins, who has been in office for 22 years, was cited for his collaborative approach to government. He also is president of the Newton County Economic Development Commission, which developed the Newton County Renewable Energy Park.

The 180-acre site is near the Newton County Landfill and was created through a partnership with Republic Services. Also on the site is INIG, a manufacturing company which uses methane from the landfill in an energy source.

Collins was nominated by Linda Woloshansky of the Center for Workforce Innovations.
