June jobless rates rise in northern Indiana metro areas

Jobless rates edged higher in June from May across several northern Indiana metro areas, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development reported.

Indiana’s June jobless rate was 2.4%, up from 2.2% in May. The U.S. jobless rate in June was 3.6%, which was unchanged from May.

In the Gary area, the jobless rate was 4.6% in June, up from 3.7% in May, but down from 6.4% in June 2021.

The Michigan City-LaPorte area jobless rate was 4% in June, up from 3.2% in May but down from 5.9% in June 2021.

The June jobless rate in the Elkhart-Goshen area was 2.3% in June, up from 1.8% in May but down from 3.1% in June 2021.

The South Bend-Mishawaka jobless rate in June was 3.7%, up from 2.9% in May, but down from 4.9% in June 2021.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that total non-farm payroll in the U.S. rose by 372,000 in June. Notable job gains were in professional and business services, leisure and hospitality and health care.
