Jobless rates fall across metro areas of Northwest and North Central Indiana in April

The jobless rate in the Gary metropolitan area and other metro areas around Northwest and North Central Indiana in April dropped when compared to March, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The Gary area’s jobless rate for April was 4.4 percent, down from 6.3 percent in March but up from 4.3 percent in April 2018, according to the state, citing data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Unemployment also was down in the Michigan City-LaPorte area in April, which recorded a jobless rate of 4.1 percent, down from 5.7 percent in March. The Michigan City-La Porte area jobless rate in April 2018 also was 4.1 percent.

The South Bend-Mishawaka area jobless rate in April was 3.2 percent, down from 4.1 percent in March. The South Bend-Mishawaka area jobless rate in April 2018 also was 3.2 percent.

The Elkhart-Goshen area’s jobless rate in April was 2.6 percent, down from 3.2 percent in March but up from 2.1 percent in April 2018.

Indiana’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate in April was 3.6 percent, which was unchanged from March. The national jobless rate in April was 3.6 percent, which was down from 3.8 percent in March.
