MICHIGAN CITY — The Dunes Arts Foundation (DAF) and the Dunes Summer Theatre announces its 2nd annual “Celebration of the Arts FUNraiser” at the Dunes Summer Theatre, June 9 at 5:30 pm CST at 288 Shady Oak Drive, Michigan City, IN 46360. Local dignitaries, the DAF Board of Directors, and summer production crew and actors will be on hand for a ribbon cutting ceremony unveiling the newly renovated resident cabins, new kitchen/green room cabin, and fire pit.
Attendees will enjoy food from Fiddleheads, receive one drink ticket, and enjoy music provided by Debra Sawyer, from the group AhTu, as well as the performance of THE SPITFIRE GRILL, a Tony Award winning musical directed by Steve Scott of the Goodman Theatre.
A special ribbon cutting event will showcase the newly renovated cabins, new kitchen/green room cabin, and “The Benjamin”, a firepit recently built by Benjamin Rutkowski, on his quest to earn his Eagle Scout badge. Benjamin organized a building crew, solicited donations for supplies, and planned the entire project from start to finish. His efforts will also be honored at this special event.
“We’re extremely proud of the renovations we’ve been able to accomplish at the Dunes Summer Theatre this past year and a half, thanks to the generosity of our donors, patrons and volunteers,” said Amy Black, Dunes Arts Foundation Board of Directors President. “This event will showcase the grounds, facility improvements and ongoing revitalization efforts so many people in and around the region are hearing about. We’ll be recognizing everyone’s hard work and efforts on this special evening.”
Since last summer, operating from a mandate of Safety, Comfort, Quality, the Dunes Summer Theatre has undergone major renovations and capital improvements ensuring that patrons experience high-quality productions in a comfortable space. Recent facility renovations completed this summer include a new bar area, completion of the resident cabins, a new fire pit, Box Office upgrades, improved parking lot and Scenic Shop, and updated electricals and lighting. The historic dance room (circa 1940’s) is currently undergoing a major renovation as well. Along with the facility renovations, the productions have been increased from just two per summer in past years to over eleven plays and concerts being offered this summer, in addition to acting and pottery classes for youth and adults. Patrons are applauding the new direction, renovations, shows, and professional set designs.
