Community Healthcare System’s phlebotomy training program has graduated its first class.

The program’s 2021 graduating class includes: Region residents Rose Caldwell, Jalene Delgado, Staci King, Reyna Mahan, Trisha Spears, and Ashley Timmons. Each student also was offered a job with Community Healthcare System hospitals.

Dr. Zhuowen Zeng, medical lab director at St. Catherine Hospital, told the students the phlebotomy profession is important.

“You are one of the first healthcare professionals our patients see,” Zeng said. “You play a very important role in diagnosing illnesses and conditions, which is an entry point for quality care (and) in a very real sense, a phlebotomist is not only an ambassador of our laboratory services department, but an entire network of patient care services across Community Healthcare System.”

The seven-week training program, based at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, prepares students for entry into the workforce as trained phlebotomists. The students go through classroom instruction and training provided by laboratory personnel, clinical staff and educational healthcare experts and complete more than 100 hours of hands-on clinical experience with actual patients across Community Healthcare System’s outpatient blood collection sites and hospital-based settings.

Community Healthcare System offers an array of training programs that can lead to a health care career through its professional development system. Additional information is available on the health system’s website.
