Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita encourages residents to see if they have unclaimed property on IndianaUnclaimed.gov.
Rokita said in a press release that more than $700 million in unclaimed property is listed on the site. The Northwest Indiana counties of Lake, Porter, La Porte, Newton and Jasper reported 11.2% of the unclaimed properties listed, while the South Bend greater area reported 8%.
“Our hardworking Hoosiers deserve to have their money returned,” Rokita said. “My office is committed to serving the people of Indiana and protecting their individual liberty. Getting unclaimed property back in the hands of its rightful owner is crucial.”
In 2022, Rokita's office returned more than $62 million in property and $48 million in 2021.
Unclaimed property includes unpaid wages or commissions, proceeds from savings or checking accounts, stocks or shares and insurance payouts, among other places. Insurance claims made up 30.7% of the unclaimed property, while unclaimed wages and payroll were $221.9 million of the unclaimed property.
Rokita's office will reach out to owners or heirs for assets that haven't had activity for a long time. Residents and businesses have 25 years to claim any money from the Unclaimed Property Division.
The division also auctions unclaimed property on eBay, especially the contents of safe deposit boxes. The proceeds from these auctions can be claimed.
It does not cost anything to claim property. Most of the unclaimed properties are for $100 or less.
Those who think they might have unclaimed property can visit IndianaUnclaimed.gov, text “claim” to 46220, call 1-866-462-5246 or email updmail@atg.in.gov.
