2013 marks the 20th anniversary of an East Chicago institution that has been quietly ministering to the needs of at-risk and medically compromised infants and children from across Lake County.
Nazareth Home, a ministry of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, was begun by one of its Sisters in 1993. Sr. Kathleen Quinn, together with St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago decided that something needed to be done to care for infants born with AIDS in Lake County. As a result, Nazareth Home was founded as a foster home designed to care for not only HIV positive infants, but also children removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect.
Since its inception in 1993, Nazareth Home has cared for over 170 children in their quiet East Chicago location. The mission then is the same today: providing a loving, caring and stable beginning for infants and children faced with extraordinary challenges.
