It’s hard to believe we are already a month into 2025. The holidays were a blur, and cold weather has made the new year seem best spent hunkered under a warm blanket. But we already have a new president, new governor and plans for a prosperous future. This issue is filled with much hope for that future.

We start with technology that will make it easier to recover and detect diseases at the Region’s health care facilities. Doctors are treating patients with the latest procedures here, making access to care within reach.

Then we talk to four women who chose careers in manufacturing. They say jobs in the trades are a gateway to better pay and career satisfaction with a little training and tenacity.

Regional airports are making it easier for business travel with commercial and corporate flights. Fliers say they are happy to skip a trip into Chicago. Farmers are looking for alternate ways to ensure future success too. Leasing some of their land to solar companies is one option some families have embraced, but some communities are skeptical of the longterm effects on the land and aesthetics.

In Highland, this issue’s featured town, residents gladly volunteer to help build a bright future. With good schools, low tax rates and vibrant downtown businesses, Highland is touted as an up-and-coming community.

We also are starting a new series on economic development. As new infrastructure takes shape, we take a look at the organizations working behind the scenes to bring unprecedented opportunities to Northwest and North Central Indiana. This story is the first in a series of six in 2025.

New this year also is a column called “Career Path.” This issue we share the story of a woman starting her own business after years in the corporate world. Small businesses like hers are a cornerstone of the Region’s economy. So, the story of two colleagues addressing a need in home health care will inspire you too.

If you know the Lubezniks, the “McFamily” does much more than run McDonald’s stores. They also give back to the communities they serve and remember their customers first.

Finally Sherri Ziller, president and CEO of the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority, writes about plans for transportation infrastructure and a very hopeful future, indeed. Enjoy this issue!
