Teens exhibit work at Lubeznik Center

MICHIGAN CITY – Lubeznik Center for the Arts presents Realm of Dreams, an exhibition highlighting the work of local young artists, Lu and Ry Hook. Realm of Dreams will run through Sunday, March 10.

The two brothers live on a farm with their artist parents, Andrea Peterson and Jon Hook. One of the family’s values is to live by leaving a tiny environmental footprint.  This objective is achieved with the cooperation of all the family members who share a deep respect and connection to nature. This connection informs their life and their art.

Lu Hook, 13, works with mixed media, primarily wool, yarn and glass. At 10, Lu taught himself to crochet from a library book. The shapes he crochets are based on hyperbolic geometry, a form akin to those seen in lettuce leaves and sea slugs. These influences can be seen as a direct result of his duties on the farm, where he tends to four vegetable gardens, a personal flower garden and collects seeds.

The work of Ry Hook, 15, depicts “creatures from another world” using various types of paper, markers, inks, crayons, and pencils. As farm manager, Ry keeps all the farm machinery and hand tools working and tends to the chickens, turkeys and goats.  These interests are reflected in his stylized creatures that combine characteristics of animals, plants and machinery.

The environment the brothers create in the NIPSCO Education Studios at Lubeznik Center for the Arts is intended to bring the viewer into their private world, a world deeply rooted in nature.

Admission to Realm of Dreams is free. For more information, please call Lubeznik Center for the Arts at (219) 874-4900 or e-mail artinfo@lubeznikcenter.org.
