HAMMOND – Through a grant from the Hammond Gaming Advisory Council, the Challenger Learning Center has begun offering Hammond first graders a chance to try their hands at being junior astronauts. The students are participating in Challenger's newest STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program called Moonbase Explorers.
“The hands-on science, coupled with reading directions, recording observations, working as a team, counting samples – it’s all about what they’re learning in the classroom; but here they put it to use as they perform the job of scientists and engineers in our simulators. This is what STEM education is all about,” said Becky Manis, director at the Challenger Learning Center.
Students work with real, hands-on science concepts like magnetism, measurement, force and motion and more under the premise of a mission to the moon. Additional information available by calling 219-989-3250.
