As a longtime La Porte County resident, Shannon Walker looks forward to leading the Boys & Girls Clubs of La Porte County.
Walker, who has 15 years of nonprofit leadership experience, succeeds Michelle Shirk as chief executive officer. Shirk grew the organization to 1,500 children from 2019 to 2026.
“I am honored to join an organization that is already thriving and making a real difference for children and families across our county,” said Walker in a press release. “My first priority is to build on what is working: our clubs, our incredible staff and leadership, our site partnerships, and the operations that allow us to serve 1,500 children across La Porte County.
Walker helped nonprofits strategize on grants as a consultant before joining the Boys & Girls Clubs.
“Shannon's career has been dedicated to strengthening organizations and improving lives throughout La Porte County,” said Anthony Novak, board Chair. “We are excited to bring her philanthropic background, deep commitment to this community, and vision for the future to the club as we continue expanding our impact and creating great futures for local youth.”
Walker also was a vice president at the Unity Foundation of La Porte County, and executive director for association advancement at the La Porte County Family YMCA.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and public relations from Franklin College and a Master of Science in technology, leadership and innovation from Purdue University.
Walker serves as board chair of Nest Community Shelter and a co-facilitator of the La Porte County Housing and Homelessness Coalition.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of La Porte County has headquarters in Michigan City, and operates clubs at eight La Porte County schools.
