Hammond's firefighters are investing in the future of downtown by purchasing the historic former Substation No. 9.
“This project represents everything we’re striving for in Hammond, taking a piece of our city's history, breathing new life into it, and creating a venue for our residents to gather,” said Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. in a press release.
Firefighters plan to turn the building into an event space that will give the community a place to gather and play.
“Every Hammond firefighter has a personal stake in this building, and in the future of our city,” said Mike Hull, president of the Hammond Professional Firefighters Association Local 556. “We’re delivering an affordable, modern venue featuring the region’s first rooftop spot west of Valparaiso and north of Route 30.”
The multipurpose space will include artwork depicting Hammond's firefighters, entertainment and space for private events.
“Sitting just 75 feet from the new South Shore Line with downtown Hammond in the background, this space brings that unmistakable downtown Chicago energy right to our backyard,” Hull said. “Get ready: street parties and major events arrive in 2027!”
The association purchased the building at 435 Fayette St. from the Hammond Redevelopment Commission. It plans to open the space in 2027.
“To see our own firefighters investing directly into the heart of downtown Hammond is incredible,” McDermott said. “This venue is going to be a jewel for our downtown district, blending entertainment, history and incredible food into a place we can all be proud of.”
The building had been home to a South Shore Arts gallery since 1998. It closed earlier this year.
