After two years of construction, the $12 million Wingtip Aviation hangar is opening.
A ribbon cutting July 17 celebrated the opening of the about 47,000-square-foot facility.
“This new hangar represents a major milestone for Wingtip Aviation and our commitment to Gary/Chicago International Airport,” said Jeromy Montesano, owner of Wingtip Aviation, in a press release. “By consolidating our operations into this purpose-built facility, we are better positioned to serve our customers, support our employees and continue growing alongside one of the most dynamic airports in the Region.”
Powers & Sons Construction of Gary managed the project, which created almost 150 construction jobs. The facility is expected to support 20 jobs.
The Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority developed the project.
“This new hangar represents the continued progress and momentum happening at Gary/Chicago International Airport and throughout our city,” City of Gary Mayor Eddie Melton said. “Strategic investments like this create opportunities for our residents, support good-paying jobs, and strengthen Gary’s position as a destination for business and economic growth.”
The project also received $1.3 million in funding through the Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative grant program.
“The opening of the Wingtip Aviation hangar is another important milestone in GCIA's ongoing evolution as a regional aviation hub,” said Steve Mays, Vice President of the Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority. “This facility enhances the services we can offer, supports our airport tenants and further demonstrates our commitment to creating an environment where businesses can succeed and grow.”
The project is one of a series of improvements to the airport that began in 2015 with the extension of its main runway to about 9,000 feet. That project led to the addition of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility in 2018. UPS began cargo service began in 2020. And a new traffic control tower was approved in 2024, along with other elements of the airport's master plan.
