A new YMCA will be built next to Fox Memorial Park in La Porte.
The La Porte County Family YMCA, Health Foundation of La Porte and the City of La Porte announced the location on 38 acres on Truesdell Avenue. The location offers expansion opportunities also.
“La Porte County’s needs continue to evolve, and the YMCA is committed to providing programs and services that meet the community needs today and into the future,” said Scott Helmkamp, CEO of the La Porte County Family YMCA, in a press release.
The Indiana Economic Development Corp. sent the city a pre-commitment letter for a Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative grant.
“This critical funding (the READI 2.0 grant) reflects the commitment of our regional and state partners to drive economic growth and enhance quality of life for the people of La Porte,” said Mayor Tom Dermody. “Our team was fully committed to competing for these dollars because we heard clearly from residents how needed this project is.”
Community stakeholders also are invited to invest in the project through a capital campaign and fundraising opportuntities.
“This transformational investment will significantly improve health and wellness in our community, and we look forward to working with our partners to bring it to life,” Dermody said.
The YMCA will provide traditional programming such as youth programming but will also partner with community organizations.
“We look forward to partnering with the Y in new and innovative ways and are excited that the new YMCA location will integrate with Fox Park and nearby trails, creating an accessible space to strengthen community well-being for residents of all ages,” said Mark Schreiber, director of parks and recreation for the City of La Porte.
The YMCA will include wellness space, a pool and gymnasium.
“HFL is honored to be part of this effort that advances our long-term vision for a healthier La Porte County,” said Eric DeWald, CEO of Health Foundation of La Porte. “This project represents an investment in the well-being of every resident by creating new opportunities for connection, activity, and improved health for families and individuals alike.”
The La Porte County Family YMCA has served its community for more than 115 years.
