Hoop fans honor Tiger Den anniversary

Tri-Township Schools marked the 75th anniversary of the “Best Home Court in Indiana” with a girls basketball tournament Jan. 2-3.

Hundreds of fans joined in the Hoosier Hysteria at the Tiger Den to celebrate the anniversary of the gymnasium.

The competition featured La Porte vs. John Glenn followed by Tri-Township vs. Wheeler. The second night featured a consolation game followed by the championship game. John Glenn defeated the Tri-Township Tigers 23-19.

“The energy in the building as we marked the 75th anniversary was unmatched,” said Dr. Paige McNulty, Tri-Township superintendent, in a press release. “It was especially touching to witness the recognition of two fans who were at the very first game in the Tiger Den back in 1953. Now that is true Hoosier nostalgia.”

Wilma Bruder and Larry Bechler were honored for being in the stands back in 1953 when the first varsity basketball tournament was held in the Tiger Den. The court is 10 feet shorter than regulation, seats only 800 and offers the nostalgic feel of Hoosier basketball.
