Urban League to host DEI symposium

The Gary-based Uban League of Northwest Indiana will present its Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Symposium March 6.

The theme is “What is DEI and What is Not?”

The agenda will feature interactive sessions that include high school students from throughout the Region. Youth will take part in discussions that involve a variety of topics. Adults will have the opportunity to choose workshops designed to enhance their awareness of DEI. Participants will be asked to provide strategies for DEI in the workplace and community.

The Urban League has included students at the symposium for two years. Dr. Vanessa Allen-McCloud, Urban League of NWI president and CEO, said their inclusion has been a welcome change to the agenda.

“We look forward to their diverse perspectives and the value they add through creative solutions for equality,” Allen-McCloud said in a press release. “It is our goal to engage even more young people as the symposium continues to grow.”

Workshop topics include:

  • The rise and fall to close racial gaps
  • Implementing DEI training in an organization and community
  • Reclaiming DEI
  • Post DEI training: what does DEI look like after implementation?

A variety of groups and organizations are slated to attend the symposium. Groups include business/corporate administrators, affirmative action officers, educators, community leaders, nonprofit organizations, churches, public safety and human resources personnel.

The symposium will take place 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 6 at Valparaiso University. Learn more here.

“Valparaiso University is honored to host the Urban League on our campus,” José Padilla, Valparaiso University president said. “As servant leaders, we are called to uplift and support one another, embodying the true spirit of community. I hope you will join in deepening these efforts and making a lasting impact together.”
